In the French coming-of-age film Girlhood (2014), Marieme, a young girl living in a troubled neighborhood, finds herself constrained by her family, limited future prospects, and oppressive boys' rules. However, everything changes when she encounters a group of three independent and spirited girls.
Desperate for freedom and a chance to live life on her own terms, Marieme makes the bold decision to transform herself. She changes her name, alters her fashion choices, and ultimately drops out of school in order to be accepted into the gang. Her hopes are high, as she believes that this newfound alliance will offer her the liberation she so desperately seeks.
Girlhood explores the themes of identity, sisterhood, and the struggles faced by marginalized youth.
